Nikita - TV Series Review
Duration: 73 episodes
Publisher: Warner Bros.
Supplied: Bought Blu-Rays on Amazon
I have always been a pretty big fan of the James Bond series of movies. The outrageous plots, crazy stunts, cool gadgets, and many other things are all a lot of fun. Nikita is a show that is basically like a television version of James Bond. I do not want to really compare everything in this show with James Bond so I will end that here. However, all the correct building blocks are in place for any fan of the genre to find enjoyment.
This show originally aired on the CW, which is where I first saw it. Unfortunately due to whatever reasons I cannot remember, I was unable to follow it as closely as I would have liked. Fast forward to now and having the entire series at arm's reach with Blu-ray and I can finish, finally, what I started and enjoyed a few years ago.
Plot and other stuff
Most episodes are packed with a mixture of these elements: shooting, computer hacking, hand-to-hand combat, new partnerships, and betrayals. There is always something going on to keep the pace of the show high and packed with energy. The stakes are always, somehow, realistic and extreme. It starts with a revenge plot and escalates to some seriously outrageous situations.
The series has a number of plots along its 4 seasons and they are all pretty well developed and wrapped up. Some of the crazier ones include brain-washing and body doubles.
None of the major or minor characters seem like they are over/under-used. Everyone seems to pull their own weight on the team with something to offer. Even the major villains are utterly likable in how abhorrent they are.
The writing is fairly well done as most of the plots are coherent and not very often is there a totally blatant plot hole. It is hard to do such a long-term series and keep everything as realistic as this so I commend the writers on a job well done.
Season 4 having only 6 episodes means that things happen and are wrapped up in a hurry but it did not feel like anything was missing. Despite the acceleration of the story it still seemed to come together very nicely.
Conclusion
It is pretty hard to talk about an entire television series. However, I really enjoyed this series in its entirety. As indicated in the opening, I love the spy drama and action type of setting. It's a supercharged bit of reality. The story overall was compelling. The different arcs seemed to move into one another fairly seamlessly so as to not have any filler or confusion. I enjoyed all the characters, whether they were good or bad. I found no one particularly irritating. Sure, some of the plot does get borderline ridiculous, but that's part of the fun of this kind of genre. It rides that edge very well without jumping the shark of logic.
Recommendation
If you like James Bond, then you should definitely check out Nikita. There's a lot of action and crazy plots to enjoy as well as fun characters. There's a lot to like and not much to hate. Even hating the bad guys is fun.
