The Witch - Movie Review

The Witch - Movie Review

Duration: 93m
Watched: Theater

I am not really sure what exactly to say about this movie. I, and two of my friends, went to see this on the recommendation of another friend. The story revolves around an early American settler family in New England and their plight to survive in the frontier. The title is The Witch. How bad could it be?

Well, the answer to that question is, "I don't know". This movie was very strange. It is full of ancient dialogue. Not a lot happens at all throughout the film. There is also a huge lack of any flashy effects of any kind.

Despite all these criticisms I still felt a dark pall of dread while watching this. The lighting, settings, costumes, props, animals, music, all of it contributed to one of the most disturbing feelings I have ever had watching a film. It felt dirty and gritty in the literal sense of the words.

I do not like to talk to much about horror films because of the possibility to spoil the entire point of the movie. So, I think I will leave this here.

Conclusion
I did not hate this. Somehow, while feeling extremely tired, and creeped out simultaneously I finished all of it. While I would not say I enjoyed it either, it is something very peculiar. I would definitely say I would not watch this movie by myself. The atmosphere was so well done it just brought everything together.

Recommendation
If you want to see something that would be considered somewhat unconventional by today's standards, then maybe give it a whirl. However, it might not be everyone's cup of tea due to just how bizarre it is. I really do not recommend seeing this alone, either.
