I haven't been watching anything really "new to me" lately so I haven't posted much. However, that is not to say that I have not been idle and not watching or experiencing anything. So let's go over some of that shall we?
Another Me: Okay, this one WAS new to me, but it was shit. This is a horror story(I think?) starring Sophie Turner(you know her as Sansa Stark if you watch Game of Thrones), which is initially what drew me to watch it in the first place. Unfortunately, the plot is extremely lackluster, and the characters were bland and barely developed any personality at all. It also had a subplot that didn't really go anywhere exciting. Overall, I would give this a miss.
The Matrix Trilogy: I have not seen these movies in many years so I decided to watch all of them over the course of a few days. It seems like these have largely been forgotten by almost everyone in recent culture. How does it hold up? Well....
The first movie totally holds up for the most part. Mostly practical effects and awesome camera work make this an instant classic. They do a fantastic job of obfuscating what it is that is actually going on behind the scenes until the big reveal. Totally awesome movie!
The second movie breaks down a little bit. The major plot is revealed and we discover a whole lot more about how The Matrix works on a functional level. There are a lot of cool ideas thrown around here and a lot of it works. Too bad not all of it does. The CGI in this movie is way overused and looks absolutely terrible. It does not hold up so well. Still a fun watch, though.
The third movie also uses a lot of CGI but they do a much better job of covering it up. The Matrix is falling apart seeing it happen is pretty scary. Also, the human city is facing total extinction so we get to see a lot more stuff happen outside in the real world. This one is improved technically and holds up a lot better than the second one.
Overall these were pretty fun movies despite the overarching plot being a bit confusing. I would recommend these films to anyone looking for something with a unique flair and decent choreography and action scenes. Just ignore the later part of the Burly Brawl(you'll know what it is, you can't miss it).
What, no anime? Ha, surely you jest. Yes, I have a couple anime to discuss here.
AKB0048: Ya, I totally watched this again. This is such a bizarre series. AKB0048 is an Idol group that goes around the galaxy holding concerts on multiple worlds. However, not all of these worlds have freedoms for entertainment. Some of them are completely restricted and have heavy entertainment bans. There is military-grade resistance against some of these concerts and it can get pretty ridiculous.
The plot is pretty bold in just how totally outlandish it seems. However, everything about this universe is about hope. The characters are mostly all cheerful and want to have fun and bring joy to everyone. The music is awesome and how it was integrated into the series overall was pretty fun. It's a ridiculous series but I just love it to pieces!
Magic Knight Rayearth: Holy crap was this an oldy! I busted out my old DVD collection of MKR and watched it(only Season 1 presently). This is an absolute classic in terms of animation. The plot is exactly what you would expect from any old generic adventure series: Get pulled into someone's problems > Learn you were chosen heroes > Save the world. It's very straightforward.
I like just about everything in this series. The main 3 protagonists are all very different people but manage to get along and persevere despite their situation. The antagonists all have a very different goal for wanting to defeat our heroines keeping them fully unique as well. The old-school animation is just awesome looking too. Also special mentions for the boss-levels of cheesy intro music. Kudos to Sandy Fox on that one.
Definitely give this a look if you want to see an old school Magical Girl series that's a little more swords and sorcery than Sailor Moon.
