Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Tairan - Anime Review

Duration: 12 Episodes + 1 OVA
Supplied: DVDs purchased via RightStuf
Published: Sentai Filmworks

Here we are again in the third installment of the Koihime Musou series. In this season we discover a high ranking Lord is cursed and is slowly turning into a cat! They end up seeking the help of none other than Aisha and her group of bizarre characters. If you have made it this far you basically know what to expect. Why would you want it any other way?

This series is basically more of the same from the last 2 seasons. However, this season focuses a bit more on Touka(Ryuubi) as our main protagonist. There is still plenty of the other characters to go around so do not sweat it if you miss your favorites. The companions go off in 3 different groups, 3 different directions, to acquire 3 different ingredients for an antidote for the Lord. A variety of things happen and it is all fairly entertaining. Outsmarting the cat-girl tribe and  seeing the inner workings of the Go family were especially memorable.

We finally get to meet a few new characters here. One of my favorites Minmei(Shuutai) finally makes an appearance and gets some screen time. There's also a pretty awesome overarching plot going on throughout the season and climaxes in a pretty gnarly battle at the end. Ya, it's not amazingly animated, again, but what can you do? Also, something to note, they toned down the fan-service a bit. There is still plenty but it is not just everywhere for no reason like it seemed to be in season 2. Like it or not it is what it is.

I have to make special mention of the fact that the randomly-inserted chibi scenes make their triumphant return; intact. These are always a gem because they just serve no purpose other than to amuse. Rinrin's animated hairpin is also back in service!

Conclusion
It's more Koihime! There are a metric ton of characters in this series and it's a shame we can't spend more time with more of them. There are plenty of laughs to be had and zany schemes for everyone. It doesn't overstay its welcome and still manages to give us new characters to meet and enjoy.

Recommendation
If you liked the first 2 seasons you'll be sure to love this. I laughed my ass off a good few times. It's just so silly.
