From the New World follows a group of children throughout many years of their lives. Their society is seemingly simplistic, if not intentionally archaic. However, one thing certainly stands out, and it is that everyone who lives there is able to utilize Psychokinesis(PK). As the kids explore they discover things that raise a lot of questions about their culture, its history, and the world at large. There is much more at stake than anyone could possibly realize.
Our protagonist is a girl named Saki Watanabe. She is a very strong and likable girl. We get to see almost the entire story from her perspective and learn everything that she and her friends learn along the way.
The beautiful animation was done by A-1 Pictures. It's a colorful, natural world. I do not normally compliment something like clothing design but whoever designed the stuff they used for this series had a really keen eye. It really popped and fit the theme of the world and the characters very well.
One thing I am going to address here is that there are sexual elements in this story; hetero as well as homo. If that sort of thing bothers you, well, get over it. This does not define the story at large and is actually not even a significant part. It is not overt in any way so you should not have any need to avert your eyes. Trust me, it will not make you go blind.
Conclusion
This series was fantastic. Literally! Although it is not conventional fantasy, PK can be used as a suitable analog to magic. A lot of amazing and crazy things can be done with PK in this world. The plot is very long and drawn-out but we learn everything along with the characters and get answers to their questions at the same time as well. The compelling aspect of this series for me was discovery. I wanted to know more. After finishing it, I still want to know more about that universe.
Recommendation
You bet! This was given to me as a recommendation from a friend and I am here to pass it on to everyone else. It is a long story but one that is well worth starting. I wish there was more but I am totally satisfied with what was delivered. Check it out!
