Dream Eater Merry - Anime Review

Duration: 13 Episodes

In a universe where dreams are a lot more integrated into the fabric of existence we can experience whole new levels of nightmares. Yumeji Fujiwara has a unique ability; he can tell exactly what kind of dream you are going to have and his accuracy is terrifying! Yumeji, unfortunately, has been having recurring nightmares about cats and has no idea why. His dreams and reality eventually collide when he meets a strange girl named Merry who is looking for answers of her own.

In Dream Eater Merry, we get a couple of "Fish out of Water" Protagonists with Yumeji and Merry. The story leans more on Yumeji's conflict and development but there's a lot going on with Merry as well. It is your standard Hero story but with a really cool universe attached to it.

Speaking of the universe, I really liked it. It was a very bizarre mix of settings and themes which really emphasizes the fact that dreams are such a heavy influence here. They really did not hold back. Merry's outfit, though. How does no one notice it or make any comments?

Conclusion
I did enjoy this but it comes with a caveat: The theme and story are both very fascinating. However, there is a lot of information thrown out at the viewers and we are left with a lot of stuff unanswered as a result. It is the same issue I had with Canaan, in that it seems like we are dropped in at a random part of an existing timeline and we do not get enough backstory for everything to make sense. Stuff pops up and is completely unexplained by the end. I still have so many more questions. At least we get a more-or-less satisfying conclusion to the main plot.

Recommendation
I would say yes, I do recommend it, because we see some pretty strange themes and designs here. If you want something a little more bizarre this might fit the bill. Just keep in mind you may be left wanting by the end.
