Louise is a terrible mage. Everything she tries to do magically results in a disaster; usually an explosion. When it comes time for all 2nd year magic students to summon their life-long magical familiars, everyone is understandably on edge when it's Louise's turn to begin the ritual. While all the other students ended up with some sort of animal familiar, Louise is not so fortunate. She manages to summon a totally average human male; Saito Hiraga. Forced to keep him as her familiar, shenanigans ensue.
The Familiar of Zero reminded me, immediately, of Harry Potter: The school, the cloaks, the wands, even the giant tables in the dining/great hall. There's a lot of similarities here. The universe itself is quite a departure from Earth and its civilization as we know it. There are two moon and there is a huge cultural divergence between the magic wielding Nobles and the non-magic using Peasants.
There is a ton of potential for a series like this since magic inherently has no boundaries and they definitely got creative. I even liked all of the side-kick cast. The headmaster was rather amusing.
Saito is completely out of place and constantly gets into trouble regularly. Which is great for the viewer, since we know nothing of the world ourselves. We learn about it all right along with him!
Conclusion
This story, its cast, and its pacing, were all pretty solid. It did tend to move along a bit too quickly for my taste towards the end, however, it still held my attention pretty firmly. I laughed a lot in regards to the relationship between Saito and Louise. Those two just do not get along! I loved the heck out of this!
Recommendation
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone. It's super silly and is great for a laugh. It's very light-hearted. It also does not overstay its welcome. If you wondered what Harry Potter might look like in anime-form, you might find that answer with this. Go go go!
