Duration: 11 Episodes

Published: Sentai Filmworks

*Note: This series is a completely isolated spinoff and any prior knowledge about anything in the Fate universe is absolutely unnecessary.

Oh, another series in the Fate universe. Hey, this is a little different. It has some similar characters but sentient magic wands and Magical Girls? What is going on here?

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya is a spinoff of the traditional Fate series and it stars Illyasviel Von Einzbern as its main protagonist. She ends up accidentally coming into contact with a strange, and pushy, magic wand. Being transformed into a Magical Girl was a total accident; what's the worst that could happen? Maybe it is better that we do not ask that....

I will start off by saying I have not been even remotely a fan of the Fate series up to this iteration. However, this has changed. This series has a much more fun protagonist in Illya. She's bubbly, cheerful, friendly, and dedicated. Not to mention the supporting cast: Miyu, Rin, and Luvia who are all quite capable. Ah, and don't forget the wands! What chaos!

The thing that, I think, puts this series over the others, for me, was its length. It was a scant 10 episodes(with a fun OVA type at the end) and did not overstay its welcome. It was well paced and moved right along and had plenty of character development for just about everyone. Sure I'd like to know a bit more about Miyu and Luvia but we learn the important stuff at least.

One thing I would like to touch on is the animation. Silver Link is responsible for the animation production for this series and I think they really outdid themselves. Some of the action scenes are totally amazing and had me completely hooked. One scene really stood out to me and if you watch it you will probably figure out what it is.

Conclusion
Wow this really took me by surprise. I have seen both Fate/Zero and Stay Night and they both kind of bored and frustrated me. This, however, had so much more energy. It still manages to keep some of the dark tone of the main series too. The action was amazing, the animation was excellent, and the story was fun! Maybe being a completely isolated story line helped? Whatever it was, I liked it.

Recommendation
Well, it's another Magical Girl series with a Fate coat of paint on it. You know what, though? It was pretty damn fantastic! I had tons of fun with it and it did not overstay its welcome in the least. I can't wait to see the next adventure!
