Suguri - Game Review

I just want to say, firstly, that I am not a great fan or player of the Bullet Hell genre.

Suguri is a Bullet Hell style game where the protagonist, Suguri, must complete a series of progressively more difficult levels. Apparently a group of interstellar travelers are trying to make Earth their home. However, before that, they must eradicate the current inhabitants of the planet. With Suguri's ability to fly and vast arsenal of weapons it should be no problem......

The gameplay of Suguri is really straightforward but it is also very tricky to learn. You have a Primary and Secondary fire button with a huge variety of weapons that can be swapped out into either position. You unlock these by dying repeatedly; which you will do. Shooting, for the most part, locks Suguri in place. So you have to reposition often to avoid taking damage. You also get a Hyper Attack(up to 3 stocks) which grants momentary invincibility. The default is for the Primary but the Secondary can be used by holding it down while hitting the Hyper Attack button. These attacks all vary based on the weapon equipped. The last major mechanic is the Dash. This allows Suguri to pass harmlessly through plasma-based attacks. This also has a major benefit of slightly filling up your Hyper Meter. Missiles and other solid objects will still clobber her in the face, though. Another downside is that using it builds Heat which causes Suguri to take more damage the higher it is; use it sparingly.

The story and characters are all pretty bare-bones. It's an arcade-style game after all. This game has 7 levels in total with progressive difficulty. It took me about 8~hours to complete in full. On Easy. Using Level Select. Yes, this game does have an Arcade Mode that lets you fly through the entire game with a single loadout but the game's difficulty is SO HIGH that you'll probably eventually break and do it through the level selector too! You only get a single life and there is no way to replenish your health bar. Any damage you take is permanent. The bosses are all cruel and unforgiving. Fortunately, most levels are pretty short and "mastering" them doesn't take too awful long.

Other stuff includes: 3 main difficulty settings, the ability to save replays, a mode to practice on just the bosses(the ones you have beaten), and a scoreboard. The soundtrack to the game is also really good! It's even free in the game files(if you're into that sort of thing).

Conclusion

I really like this game. It was absolutely the most difficult game I've ever played, but I liked it. I grabbed it to support developer Orange Juice since their well-supported crazy dice game 100% Orange Juice is just so much fun. Even managing to scrape out a tiny victory on Easy brought near tears of joy to my face. It was not even a long time investment either. it's something one can easily pick up and play for a bit and put right back down. Each session only lasting a few minutes.

Recommendation

As someone that does not play these kinds of games, yes, I still recommend it. It was short, overall, but every level I beat felt like some monumental accomplishment. I rarely receive that kind of feeling in anything else these days. I want to stress how hard this game is, though. It will tear you apart a bunch of times. This game does not mess around.
